Soaring High - Swainson's Hawk

Original (24 x 30) - $2050.00
The Swainson's hawk is a bird of the great grassland habitats of North America. The bird breeds
from the prairies of Canada, down through the Great Basin and into the agricultural lands of
California, where the species is quite rare due to habitat destruction. Swainson's hawks all migrate
to South America for the winter, some as far south as Argentina. In the south, the birds congregate
on certain agricultural lands and subsist on a diet of insects, some of which may be poisoned due
to the pesticide spraying that is common practice on the wintering as well as the breeding grounds.
In this painting I've simply depicted the joy of flight as seen from the bird's perspective. The
colorful evening sky sets off the contrasting colors of this intermediate morph of the species. The
Swainson's hawk has a range of color morphs that grade from very light to a sooty black.
