White Solitude - Snowy Owl

The snowy owl is a resident of the far northern regions of the world in both hemispheres. Primarily
a predator of the daylight hours, it may be found perched on just about any high vantage point from
which it scans its surroundings trying to detect the movements of its small mammalian prey. When
this food source becomes scarce in certain lean years, those of us who live further south may be
treated to the sight of this magnificent white owl as it moves beyond its normal winter range and
may show up all the way down to northern California.
In this painting I've shown an owl in its normal winter range in a prairie region of southern Canada
or the northern part of the United States. After a fresh blanket of snow has fallen the bird blends
with its surroundings and searches for the sign of prey while perched on an old fence post.
