Above the Oaks - Red-tailed Hawk

The red-tailed hawk is one of the most common species of birds of prey in North America. Able
to exploit a variety of habitat types, the big raptor may be found from arid deserts to high mountain
peaks and from the grassy plains to the seashore. As adaptable as it is, however, it too may someday
go the way of a lot of extinct and endangered species if we humans are not careful how we affect
its environment. Like most animals, the red-tail needs space, uncontaminated and available food,
and an undisturbed place to raise its young.
In this painting I've depicted a common scene in the foothill regions of California, a state where
good populations of the red-tail still exist. The big bird is soaring over a stand of oaks, a common
tree in many parts of California. The grassy areas between the trees hold the avian predator's
attention for it is there that it may find its next meal in the form of some hapless mouse or ground
squirrel.
