Quiet Reflections - Ring-necked Ducks

The ring-necked duck is found throughout a great deal of the North American continent but is
nowhere very abundant. It is one of the group known as "bay-ducks" but, in winter, it is most often
found in fresh water woodland ponds or small lakes. It often dives deep to feed on submerged
vegetation or invertebrates such as snails and aquatic insects. Like others in its tribe, the ring-neck
runs across the water to become airborne. As with other species of waterfowl, the ring-neck is a
strong flyer and can be identified at great distance as a duck because of its rapid wing beats and
direct flight characteristics.
In the painting, I've depicted a pair of ring-necked ducks in breeding plumage quietly floating in a
protected inlet of a small lake. They are in relatively shallow water as evidenced by the sprigs of
emergent vegetation, in this case a species of Eleocharis or spike rush. The reflections create an
abstract design in the slightly rippled water, especially for the more strikingly colored male duck.
It is the mating time and these two ducks have become a pair for the remainder of the summer.
They will attempt to raise a brood ducklings in order to carry on the lineage of their species.
