Anacapa Island - California Brown Pelicans

The California brown pelican is an endangered species as is the population that inhabits the Atlantic
seaboard, especially off the coast of Florida. The California birds breed in a few locations off the
Baja peninsula and Sea of Cortez in Mexico and off the southern California coast on Anacapa Island
in the Channel Islands. During winter the birds may range as far north as British Columbia. The
birds are distinctive in their feeding behavior, diving from about thirty feet to catch fish near the
shore.
In this painting I've tried to show a flock of brown pelicans in their typical foraging formation which
is a long line of birds flying and gliding low over the ocean. The breeding island of Anacapa is seen
in the distance through the mist. Rather than show the line as seen from the side I chose an oblique,
almost head-on view of the flock so as to depict more of the birds and thus capture their
characteristic foraging behavior to better effect.
