The Lookout Rock - Mountain Quail
Ronald W. Schlorff©
Original (18 x 24) - $1950.00
The mountain quail is the largest of the North American quail species. The sexes are similarly
marked but the female is slightly duller in plumage coloration overall. Members of the worldwide
group of birds that includes pheasants and the barnyard chicken, mountain quails are sometimes
more often heard than seen; their call is loud crowing note or a single note call similar to that of
the pygmy owl.
In this painting I wanted to just do a portrait of this handsome quail in typical habitat at the lower
to mid-elevations. I chose a scene in the central coastal mountains of California where the species
is fairly common. This bird is a male and he has chosen a large rocky perch from which to advertise
his territory.
