The mountain lion is the largest cat species common to North America. They are found in most of
the major habitat types from the high mountains to the dry desert regions. Adult males may reach
a length of 8 feet, including the tail, and weigh between 130 and 150 pounds. Females are about
seven feet long and weigh about 65 to 90 pounds. Both sexes are very powerful and capable
predators, able to bring down prey several times their weight, such as elk. Their primary prey
animals throughout much of their range are deer which they attack from ambush and kill with a
powerful bite to the base of the skull.
In this painting I have shown an adult male lion resting on a rocky ledge in typical forested habitat
in the Sierra Nevada of California where the species is quite common. The animal appears to be
aware of your presence and is exhibiting its displeasure with an aggressive stare and flattened ears.
While the big cats rarely attack humans, it is useful to understand that they are fully capable of
killing animals much larger and stronger than yourself.
