The Lion Queen

The females are the primary "bread-winners" of the typical African lion pride. More often than not
the lone adult male is asleep and completely oblivious to the drama of the hunt that a lioness and
its sisters and adult daughters may be conducting nearby. However, once alerted to the successful
kill, the patriarch is usually the first to dine on the carcass, ahead of the female providers and their
hungry cubs. However, I don't want to leave the impression that the dominant male is a total
parasite; he does play an important role in defending the pride from attack by other lions or other
predators.
In this painting I've tried to depict a lioness about to embark on a hunt at dusk. From her position
"down-wind" she scans a distant herd of wildebeest or zebras searching for signs of weakness or
vulnerability in the intended prey animals. She may be a lone predator or part of a small group of
cooperating hunters sizing up the next meal for the pride members. She is apparently unconcerned
with the seeming injustices of male-dominated pride life but rather is content to carry out her role
as the eminently capable predator of the African savannah. She is THE LION QUEEN.
