The Lion Prince

African lions are incredibly capable predators of the extensive grassland and savannah habitats of their great native continent. Virtually without natural enemies except for bands of hyenas which may occasionally overpower a lone or incapacitated individual, these powerful great cats are aptly referred to as "king of beasts".

In this painting I've tried to depict a sudden encounter with a young adult male in his prime. He may be a pride leader or a lone individual wandering the grassy "seas" in search of a pride to take over. He would accomplish this formidable feat only after first displacing the pride's reigning monarch by winning a bloody and sometimes mortal combat. This seemingly brutal scheme of competition among the big cats ensures the strength of the breed by allowing only the fittest individuals to mate and pass on their genes to the next generation of lions.

You have just inadvertently stumbled onto this great beast and perhaps disturbed his "cat nap". Now what are you going to do!?
