Golden-mantled ground squirrels are common mammals throughout the Pacific northwest in the more open stages of forest ecosystems that are dominated by mixed conifer and hardwood trees. These active little ground squirrels are important in the diets of many forest-dwelling avian and mammalian predators such as hawks, owls, foxes, bobcats, and coyotes. Unbeknownst to many humans these appealing and "friendly" little creatures carry the dreaded bubonic plague in their fleas. Each year a few people get close enough to ground squirrels to be bitten by a flea and become infected with the disease.

In this painting I've shown a ground squirrel dining on a typical seed source readily available from his forest environment. While he eats he is constantly alert to predators lest he should find that he becomes the "main course."
