Riparian Solitude - Great Blue Heron

The great blue heron is the largest North American member of the world-wide family of predatory
birds that includes herons and egrets. Employing a large repertoire of hunting tactics that range
from stately slow stalking to frantic lunging, these relatively ancient avian species are highly
efficient predators. Whether the intended prey are fish, frogs, or small mammals, these birds often
can be successful greater than fifty percent of the time. This is a much greater success ratio than
most raptors can claim.
In this painting I've shown a great blue heron at rest between feeding bouts. Being a highly
successful predator, perhaps he has taken his quota of small fish, at least for now. He appears
content to relax on a favorite perch and perhaps preen his magnificent plumage. Even during this
quiet time, however, the heron is ever watchful for other members of his species that may dare to
encroach on "his" stretch of river. Were an interloper to appear, the huge bird would instantly rouse
himself to chase off the intruder with ponderous wing beats and a raspy croaked warning to "stay
away!"
