Pair-bond - Buffleheads

Ronald W. Schlorff©
Original (7 x 9.5) - $850.00

Unlike many other species of duck, the bufflehead avoids dense marshy habitats in favor of the open water of lakes, ponds, and coastal estuaries. The energetic little duck builds its nest in tree cavities excavated by other species. The nest tree is often over or near water, much in the same manner as a wood duck breeds.

In this painting I've tried to capture the mood following the often energetic antics of courtship behavior. It's a more serene moment as the monogamous pair prepares to produce the next generation of its species in a brood that could number as many as eleven ducklings.
