The western bluebird is a common species in valleys and foothills of the west. In California, it is
often associated with oak grassland and oak woodland habitats. This smaller cousin of the
American robin subsists primarily on a diet of insects which it frequently obtains by "hawking" in
the manner of a flycatcher. The bluebird makes short flights from a convenient perch, captures its
prey on the wing, then returns to the same perch.
In this painting I have shown a western bluebird at a forest edge perched on a branch of a young
valley oak. It is early spring, as evidenced by the brilliant color of the new leaves. The late
afternoon sun filters through the background trees in the woodland and back-lights the bluebird.
